Finding Nature Amidst the Concrete Jungle

Exciting Outdoor Activities You Can Do in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Dear nature lovers,
I get it, being stuck in the city can be quite a struggle for someone that prefers the wild outdoors, deep forests, and majestic waterfalls. While Kuala Lumpur may not be on the top of the list when it comes to your jungle book adventure, the city may just surprise you with more than its striking city views and luxurious malls. Here’s the thing: the KL city that we see is merely just the tip of the iceberg. Spend a little time here, and you will discover many more hidden treasures that are often overshadowed by the urbanism. As a start, here’s a list of thrilling outdoor activities that you can do to escape the concrete jungle for a little while.
Rentas Adventure Waterfall Abseilling

Rentas Adventure at Adren X Park

Located at Adren X Park, approximately 1.5 hours’ drive from the city, you will find a small establishment that organizes many adventures around Kuala Kubu Bharu, from ATV rides through rivers to waterfall abseiling. Definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Kuala Kubu Bharu has long been a go-to destination for outdoor lovers living in KL as it is one of the closest destinations where you can still find organic lush nature and natural hiking trails that are less likely to encounter inside the city. Do keep in mind that less conventional trails like these also come with a certain amount of challenge and danger.

If this is your cup of tea, you can also join their IG Broadcast channel @OUTDOORLAH.MY where they frequently organize camps and adventurous activities all over Malaysia. Just recently, they hosted a hiking trip to Gunung Tahan (the highest point in Peninsular Malaysia). From my understanding, Rentas Adventure caters more towards local activities (around KKB) and Outdoorlah organizes more extreme ones. Of course, with the challenging nature of their activities, you’ve got to meet some of the physical criteria to be eligible for it.

Regardless, you’ll still have a great time joining their local adventures at Adren X Park for a lower price that comes with:

  • Certified guides & rescue team
  • Gears
  • Meals
  • Photo/Video
  • Basic first aid
  • Permit

Their packages usually start from RM100+ depending on the activities you’re signing up for:

  • Waterfall-abseiling
  • Zipline-abseiling
  • Normal zipline
  • Water rafting
  • ATV Adventure
  • Flying fox

Remember to book ahead of time though, they’re getting more and more popular these days.

Skytrex Kuala Lumpur

SKYTREX Adventure, Sg Congkak

Something more family-friendly, perhaps? As you arrive in the lively town of Hulu Langat, filled with fruit stalls and street food complemented by a natural village view as a backdrop, you’ll come across Skytrex Park. For those that don’t know, it is somewhat of a playground, except adults can play (and love it) too!

Skytrex is available for children below 12 years old as long as they’re accompanied by adults. Here, you can opt for an intermediate level (River Thrill Map) or the advanced level (Rapid Extreme Map).

Not exciting enough? You can also book their 2-day, 1-night camping package, starting from RM89 for camping only and RM129 for camping and Skytrex as a package. They accommodate up to 60 pax if you book early enough. It’s definitely a steal for that price especially when it comes with a long list of facilities:

  • Fridge, freezer, cooking stoves, blender, rice cooker and coffee maker available for everyone to share.
  • Cooking utensils, pots and pans for you to cook your own food (Ingredients not provided).
  • You can buy snacks and basic food items such as instant noodles, pre-packed meals and canned drinks.
  • You can order food delivery from the restaurants nearby.
  • Catering services for groups (subjected to availability with at least 7 days prior booking).
  • Towels for rent at RM10 each.
  • Pitched flysheet, table and camping chairs.
  • Sleeping bag, air mattress, mini fan, power bank, tent lamp.
  • Campfire will be set up  for you.
  • Lights to decorate your tent.
  • Surau for Muslim guests.
  • Access to a swimmable river just next to the campsite.
  • Separate toilets for male and female with shower facilities.
  • BBQ pit and charcoal at RM30.
  • BBQ Drum and charcoal at RM50 (for bigger groups).
  • Carpark provided at RM5 for your entire stay.

Don’t have to worry about cleanliness as Skytrex pride themselves with a green pledge, where they actively encourage minimal use of plastics and promote recycling. That includes visitors bringing home their own wastes.

As the park is managed by Toursim Selangor, visitors will have to pay an entry fee of RM1 for Malaysian and RM5 for Non-Malaysians.

Gua Damai

Gua Damai Extreme Park

If you're someone who enjoys heights and heat, then this is the perfect place for you! Catering mostly to rock climbing enthusiasts, this venue is located at Hulu Langat Geopark, sharing the same mountain as Batu Caves to the north, so it's not too far from the city center (about a 20-minute drive). Spanning 2.5 hectares, this park houses five different caves for exploration:

  • Crystal Cave
  • Dog Cave
  • Shawl Cave
  • Gatal Cave
  • Fig Tree Cave

However, Crystal Cave is only open to researchers and Archaeology & Speleology students. Nevertheless, with over 100 different, well-maintained climbing routes available, it's clear that these folks take rock climbing seriously.

"The rock-climbing session will not be merely a physical activity, but a spiritual enlightenment for you."

Sounds pretty interesting, doesn't it? They are also welcoming enough to allow children and primary school students as young as four years old to join them on multiple occasions, so rest assured that their safety measures are top-notch. You can even climb at night if you wish. While visiting the area, you need to get a permit at RM5 for Malaysian citizen and RM10 for non-citizen.

In terms of pricing, it's surprisingly reasonable for such interesting experiences. Their cheapest caving tour starts at RM50 per person, going all the way up to RM250 for a guided climbing experience. If you're looking for something more long-term, consider their professional courses starting at RM195 monthly. Perhaps you'll even make a friend or two to join you on your next outdoor adventure - who knows!
